Stairs that pass D1/AS1
A timber stair has to fit the floor-to-floor height and still meet NZBC D1/AS1: for a private stair the riser sits between about 115 and 190 mm, the going is at least 280 mm, the 2×riser + going result lands between 550 and 700 mm, the pitch stays under about 37°, and the width is at least 860 mm. Divide the total rise into equal risers, solve the going, and check it all lands inside those limits.
Toolie works the riser and going split out for the floor-to-floor height, checks it against D1/AS1, sizes the stringers, prices the stair build off a real NZ pricebook, and auto-draws a dimensioned stair plan and section.
- Equal risers from the floor-to-floor height
- Riser, going, pitch and the 2R+G rule checked to D1/AS1
- Minimum 860 mm width and stringer length
- Priced off a real NZ pricebook; dimensioned stair drawing

It’s part of the quote, not a separate tool
In Toolie this isn’t a one-off calculator — it feeds the actual priced quote and the build programme. Describe the job or drop in a PDF plan and Toolie runs the take-off, applies NZ site intelligence and prices it off a real NZ pricebook.

Common questions
What are the NZBC D1/AS1 limits for a private stair?
For a private stair: riser roughly 115-190 mm, going at least 280 mm, 2 x riser + going between 550 and 700 mm, pitch under about 37 degrees, and width at least 860 mm. Toolie checks your stair against these.
How do I work out the risers?
Divide the floor-to-floor height by a target riser to get a whole number of equal risers, then solve the going and check the 2R+G rule. Toolie does this for you.
Does it draw the stair?
Yes - Toolie auto-draws a dimensioned stair plan and section, and prices the build off a real NZ pricebook.
