What will the retaining wall cost? Quote it properly

Skip the rough per-metre guess. Sketch the wall elevation or describe it, and Toolie builds the take-off and prices it — and flags the height where consent and engineering kick in.

A retaining wall estimate that knows the rules

A retaining wall's cost in New Zealand swings on the height and length, the system (timber pole-and-rail, timber crib, or concrete block), the depth and size of the post holes and footings, the drainage (novacoil, drainage metal and a geotextile) and the backfill — and whether there is a surcharge above it like a driveway or a building.

Just as important is the rule: under the Building Act Schedule 1, a wall up to 1.5 m high that carries no surcharge is generally exempt from building consent, but a higher wall, or any wall carrying extra load, needs a consent and usually a specific engineering design. Toolie builds the take-off — posts, poles or blocks, rails, drainage and backfill — prices it off a real NZ pricebook, and flags when the wall crosses into consent-and-engineering territory so you can quote the design in.

It’s part of the quote, not a separate tool

In Toolie this isn’t a one-off calculator — it feeds the actual priced quote and the build programme. Describe the job or drop in a PDF plan and Toolie runs the take-off, applies NZ site intelligence and prices it off a real NZ pricebook.

Common questions

How much does a retaining wall cost in NZ?

There is no single per-metre rate - it depends on height and length, the system (timber pole, crib or block), drainage and backfill, and any surcharge. Toolie builds the real take-off and prices it off a NZ pricebook for a defensible quote.

Does a retaining wall need consent in NZ?

Generally a wall up to 1.5 m high carrying no surcharge is exempt under Building Act Schedule 1, while a higher wall or one carrying extra load (like a driveway or building above) needs a building consent and usually engineering. Toolie flags this on the quote.

Can I sketch the wall?

Yes - draw the wall elevation, type the real height and length, and Toolie reads it into the take-off and the priced quote.
