When you need a full tax invoice

Over $1,000 you issue a full tax invoice; between $50 and $1,000 a simplified tax invoice is fine; under $50 you generally do not need one. You must register for GST once your turnover passes $60,000 in any 12 months, and only then do you charge GST and issue tax invoices.

Common questions

What must a GST invoice include in NZ?

For a supply over $1,000 incl GST, a tax invoice must show the words ‘tax invoice’, your name and GST number, the date and an invoice number, the buyer’s details, a description with quantity and amount, and the GST amount or that GST is included.

Do I need to be GST registered to invoice?

No — you can invoice without being GST registered, but you can only charge GST and must issue tax invoices once registered. Registration is compulsory once turnover passes $60,000 in 12 months.

Can Toolie generate a GST invoice?

Yes — Toolie builds an IRD-compliant GST tax invoice from the job with your GST number, logo and bank details filled in, handles progress claims and retentions, and records the payment when it lands.
