What actually drives the cost of a fence
Anyone quoting a flat ‘per metre’ rate is guessing. A New Zealand fence’s cost comes down to a handful of real things:
- Height — taller fences need three rails instead of two, longer posts and more palings per metre.
- Post spacing and ground — posts at 2.0–2.4 m centres set in concrete; rocky or soft ground changes the dig and the concrete.
- Cladding — timber palings, batten, or Coloursteel/panel, each a different material and labour cost.
- Treatment — H4 for posts in the ground, H3.2 above; a coastal site pushes fixings to stainless.
- Gates, plinth boards and stepped runs — each adds materials and time.

Timber paling vs Coloursteel
Timber palings are usually cheaper on materials but heavier on labour — posts, rails, palings and fixings all go up by hand. A Coloursteel or panel fence costs more in material but goes up fast and needs little upkeep. Which is cheaper for your run depends on the length, height, access and how much of the labour is yours — which is exactly why a real take-off beats a rule of thumb.

Common questions
How much does a fence cost per metre in NZ?
There is no single rate — it depends on height, post spacing, cladding (timber palings vs Coloursteel), treatment and gates. The honest answer is to take off your specific fence; Toolie’s free fencing calculator does that and prices it off a NZ pricebook.
Is timber or Coloursteel cheaper for a fence?
Timber palings are usually cheaper on materials but more labour; Coloursteel/panel costs more in material but goes up fast with less upkeep. The cheaper option depends on the run, the height and how much labour is yours.
Do I need consent for a fence in NZ?
Most residential fences up to about 2.5 m generally do not need building consent, but boundary rules and pool-fencing law apply — check with your council. Toolie prices the fence; it is not consent advice.
